Pygmalion
Description
George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion
Adapted for the Stage by Steve Cleberg
About the Play: George Bernard Shaw’s comedy is better known by modern audiences than the myth from which the title of the play was taken. The story of a poor flower girl plucked from the streets of London to be transformed into high brow society lady feels as relevant today as it did when it was written in the early 20th century. The battle of the sexes played out between Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle still works because of the carefully balanced considerations made for both characters. We see in the action of the play universal issues that are worked out with humor, charm and wit. Pygmalion was the source for the popular musical My Fair Lady.
